Personal: Academic Struggles-Part 1

A few years back, I went back to school for a second degree in computer science because everything I saw was converging at blitzing speeds. Business decisions were becoming more data driven. Sensors attached to everything that was data worthy. Production monitoring extended from industrial plants to consumer space. Cars, traffic lights, highway tolls, televisions, thermostats, electric meters, water meters, refrigerators, lightbulbs, locks, stoves, electric outlets, water heaters, all had a wireless option. And as e-commerce sales soared, brick and mortar locations needed a digital storefront. Simply put, computing and interconnectivity augmented to a resource as far reaching as water was over the oceans. Computer science seemed like a no brainer.

However, fast forward to present day, my original plans for finishing my degree by 2019 is now long overdue. Worst of all, I feel a mixture of self disappointment and embarrassment that overwhelms me weekly. Why am I so dumb? Why can’t I see value in these higher level core classes (besides the ones in programming and databases that I’ve already taken)? Why can’t I retain any of the new theoretical information? Why am I failing this class again? Should I transfer to another school where I can take the classes in person? Will I be placed on academic probation or get kicked out of the program? Will I have enough to pay for my living expenses and last 6 classes I need complete to finish this degree?

Certainly, it’s not a rosy picture. Stay tuned for Part 2.
